What Tom is looking for:
Tom has a stellar reputation for developing and selling both commercial and serious narrative nonfiction as well as select literary fiction. With nonfiction, he’s looking for highly credentialed experts with strong networks and platforms in these areas: mind-body-spirit, narrative nonfiction, social and political science, health and wellness, current affairs, biography, psychology and self-help, business, spirituality, popular culture, LGBTQ+, history, cultural and social history, science, cooking, and sports. He’s also open to considering superbly written, powerful memoirs by well-connected authors, but they must be truly exceptional.
Tom needs to fall in love with the fiction he takes on, so he is extremely selective. He is looking for beautifully written literary novels with compelling characters and story lines, LGBTQ+ fiction, and literary-quality suspense fiction. At the current time Tom is not interested in thrillers, science fiction, romance, children’s books, or fantasy, so please do not query him with these genres.
Please email a query letter including a detailed overview of your nonfiction or fiction project, no more than 25 pages of sample writing, a concise author bio, and a list of your network and platform details copied and pasted into the body of your email (no attachments or snail mail – they will not be read) to querytom@lizadawson.com. Because of the large number of queries Tom receives, if he doesn’t respond to your query within eight weeks feel free to follow up with him; if you don’t get a response, you may assume that Tom is not available to represent your project. Thank you for your understanding.
